Canon Digital Rebel XSi
With the launch of the Digital Rebel XSi (aka 450D), Canon has once again earned its spot at the front of the “semi-pro” competition. Hosting a variety of new features for photographers of all levels, the Rebel XSi makes a great upgrade from its predecessors and the best option in its class. From first-rate image quality and to impressive speed, the features of the XSi make it stand out. It is a little pricier than some comparable options, but the extra expenditure is entirely worthwhile.
New for the Rebel XSi is an amped-up 12.2 megapixel APS-C size CMOS sensor which reduces noise at each pixel site while conserving battery power. Noise is significantly reduced thanks to the DIGIC III processor. The XSi also boasts incredible speed – it has an almost instantaneous .1 second start-up, a 3.5 frame per second burst speed, and can handle up to 53 JPEGs or 6 RAWS at a time. None but the most demanding sports photographers will be wanting for image quality at blazing speeds. And with 14-bit conversion abilities, burgeoning photographers can be sure of smooth tones and gradations.
One of the most remarkable new features on the Rebel XSi is Live View, which simplifies shooting difficult angles or the use of a tripod. Offered for the first time on an entry-level Canon, Live View mode displays the image in the viewfinder as a video feed on the large 3” LCD at 30fps. A grid line display, live histogram, and two auto-focus modes are all available in Live View mode to help with image composition and exposure adjustment. The Rebel XSi continues to distinguish itself from the pack by offering a contrast-based AF in Live View mode that allows the XSi to autofocus without flipping down its mirror – the fastest autofocus option among the competition.
Two other features that help to ensure professional-quality shots with the Rebel XSi are Highlight Tone Priority, which maintains the quality of the details in the brightest sections of an image, and an Auto Lighting Optimizer which automatically adjusts brightness and contrast for perfectly rendered images.
You won’t have to worry about missing an important shot because you’re fumbling with the menus thanks to the My Menu feature on the Rebel XSi. This easy-to-use interface makes it a breeze to pre-program the settings you use most frequently. With the touch of a button, you can snap between ISO settings, formatting, and more.
More simple changes on the XSi include the conversion from Compact Flash to SDHC storage formats. Gone are the days when the CF format was cheaper and higher capacity. Now, SD is a more viable choice for the average consumer, who will find the SD format compatible with a wider range of applications.
The body design has also been revamped. The addition of a larger screen necessitated the movement of the interface, which proved to make the buttons more accessible with one hand. The smooth compact body is a pleasure to hold, and the XSi comes in at less than 475 grams, making it no hassle to lug around.
The Xsi is offered in two packages: the body alone sells for about $799, and for only $100 more, Canon offers a package that includes the EF-S 18-55mm IS lens. This lens is the great option for most general purposes. Featuring a new breed of image stabilization, the EF-S provides up to four stop compensation to prevent blurry images caused by slower shutter speeds and shaky hands. If you are tracking a moving subject, the EF-S IS also offers panning detection for crisp, high-speed image captures.
All told, the Canon Rebel XSi is the best value in its class. It offers superior image quality and speed over the competition while remaining approachable to novice photographers. With no shortage of features, this “semi-pro” camera is the perfect bridge between a cheap point-and-shoot camera and professional equipment that costs thousands upon thousands of dollars more.
